YOUNG MALE ACHEIVEMENT PROGRAM

THE MENTOR ROLE

The Y-MAP Mentoring Program consists of two components, one-on-one and group mentoring. Roles and goals are important in the mentoring exchange and should be well defined to increase trust and promote a sense of security.

1-on-1

This  mentoring component consists of matching trained and dedicated mentors with mentees to establish a strong relationship and a bond for life. During each session, the mentors assist with homework, provide tutoring as needed, involve the mentee in community activities, follow their academic progress, and participate in other special projects or events. The mentors make weekly calls to the mentee and visit the school once per month, or more as needed.

Group mentoring

This component involves several mentees, perhaps with similar likes/dislikes or issues, getting to know one another and working together in a group setting. The primary objective in the group setting is that participants not only learn from the leader, but from each other, while also experiencing self-examination. The mentees are strategically placed together and may attend community outings, participate in volunteer activities, tutoring, exercises, and workshops as a group. There are several workshops and mentoring topics conveyed by experienced Y-MAP certified staff.
